ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Society of American Florists (SAF) invites floral designers to compete in the 56th Annual Sylvia Cup Design Competition, taking place Aug. 13, during SAF Phoenix 2025, the association’s 140th annual convention.
The Sylvia Cup is the nation’s longest-running live floral design competition, known for its high-energy atmosphere, surprise theme, and ability to challenge even the most seasoned designers. Competitors receive identical materials—fresh flowers and foliage, hard goods, and supplies—and have two hours to complete a series of themed designs in front of a live audience.
Last year’s winner, Jackie Lacey, AAF, AIFD, CFD, PFCI, embraced the opportunity to push his creative limits in a competitive environment. “You always learn a lot about flowers and yourself when you compete,” said Lacey. “It’s important to keep your experience fresh. Designing under pressure is very different than everyday design.”
This year’s competition promises to be another inspiring showcase of floral talent and creativity. Top winners will receive cash prizes sponsored by Smithers-Oasis:
- First Place: $3,000
- Second Place: $500
- Third Place: $250
Beyond the prizes, the competition offers participants valuable industry exposure, professional recognition, and hands-on experience. “It’s hard to put yourself out there to be critiqued,” said 2023 winner Michael Smith, AAF, AIFD, FDI, FSMD. “But you grow as a designer and open yourself up to new opportunities in the industry.”
Past competitors also highlight the value of learning and experimentation. “You get to test new products and try techniques you might not use every day,” said Kelsey Thompson, AIFD, a previous winner. “It’s a great first competition for anyone looking to grow.”
