On Wednesday, 22 May of this year, two brothers, Timo and Jochem, from Vlaardingen beamed with pride as they received an iPad mini from Michel Duijvesteijn (Zentoo) and Rosanne van Staalduinen (Royal Van Zanten). Zentoo, in collaboration with breeder Royal Van Zanten, launched the Chrysanthemum Naming Competition during the event Kom in de Kas ( Come to the Greenhouse ). The Leo Middelburg Chrysanten greenhouse in Maasdijk housed a velvet red-purple cut chrysanthemum that as yet had no name. Visitors to the Kom in de Kas event were invited to come up with a suitable name and have the chance of winning an iPad mini. Of the more than 400 entries, Timo and Jochem were the lucky winners with their name 'Aubergine des Fleurs'.
This was the first time that Timo and Jochem visited the Kom in de Kas event. They enjoyed it very much and saw and learned a lot. Their father, who himself works in the fruit and vegetable trade, helped them just a little bit to think up a good name. But whether he too gets a turn playing with the iPad is still to be seen – Timo and Jochem couldn't wait to start! That the brothers have green fingers at their young age is indisputable. They already have a propagator at home where they grow cucumbers, onions, tomatoes and raspberries. There's a very strong chance that we will see them come back in a few years' time, but then as workers in the vegetable, fruit or horticultural sectors!
Aubergine des Fleurs is an aubergine coloured, decorative chrysanthemum from the selection of the breeder Royal Van Zanten. Royal Van Zanten is located in Valkenburg, in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. Zentoo is the exclusive grower of Aubergine des Fleurs and will launch this new variety at auction this autumn. The name Aubergine des Fleurs was unanimously chosen as the winning name. However, given that it is subject to trademark law, the question arises of whether the runner-up ‘Royantoo' (a combination of Royal Van Zanten and Zentoo) will be the name ultimately given to the new chrysanthemum. The name Royantoo was submitted by one of the Zentoo breeders and the jury commented that it has the warm sound that befits the grandeur of this variety.
