Portland, Oregon — The New Varieties Showcase at the 2016 Farwest Show in Portland was the largest ever, with 55 new trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and vines on display. The showcase featured plants with interesting shapes, colors, growth habits and other characteristics, displayed throughout the week-long show, produced by the Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN).
Purple Pillar™ rose of Sharon, introduced by Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs, received Honorable Mention from the panel of judges for its unique upright habit and vibrant semi-double purple flowers.
Purple Pillar is a totally unique rose of Sharon: it naturally grows as a narrow column instead of a wide, spreading plant. It gets to be just 2-3' wide and 10-16' tall. In summer, each stem is packed along its entire length with purple blooms. This unusual columnar habit makes it a real space saver, ideal for narrow spaces, unique hedges, patio containers, flanking entryways, or specimen plantings.
