October: Month Of The Chrysanthemum

Each month the Flower Council of Holland focuses on a flower and in October, that is the chrysanthemum. The chrysanthemum is available in a wide range of colours such as golden yellow, bronze and deep orange, lovely colours for the autumn!

Chrysanthemum, the happy golden flower

The chrysanthemum originates from Japan and China, where it is the symbol of health and happiness. In China there is even a whole city named after the chrysanthemum: Chu Hsien and in Japan parents like to name their daughters after the flower.

Around 1700 the chrysanthemum arrived in Europe and received the name: Golden Flower (‘chryso’ is Greek for gold and ‘anthemom’ means flower), as the flower was originally yellow in colour. Nowadays the chrysanthemum is available in all colours of the rainbow and in hundreds of varieties.

The chrysanthemum is easy to manage and depending on the variety and care, can last for up to three weeks. It is therefore a happy golden flower which can be enjoyed for a long time.
