ATLANTA — Dr. Terril Nell, professor and chairman of University of Florida’s Environmental Horticulture Department was named the 2011 Floral Marketer of the Year on Friday, October 14, by the Produce Marketing Association (PMA).

This year marks the 31st anniversary of the award, which recognizes an outstanding floral professional who has served the mass-market floral industry with dedication and distinction.

Nell was presented the award by 2010 award winner Bill Byland, business manager of Micky’s Minis Flora Express, a division of N.G. Heimos Greenhouse, at the lunch general session at PMA’s Fresh Summit International Convention & Exposition at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Ga., USA.

“Dr. Nell has tirelessly dedicated his career to the growth of the floral industry and is recognized among his peers as a great guide post for the industry he obviously loves,” Byland told general session attendees. “He has turned no project or challenge away if its ultimate outcome would benefit floriculture. In this same vein, he’s the perfect gentleman always willing to share his vast knowledge with anyone seeking information or assistance.”

Nell was also recognized for helping key suppliers with problem solving quality issues and handling procedures while never losing sight of the realities industry members work with each day. He effectively pioneered research work in the area of post-harvest physiology and educated all participants within the supply chain, which has been a key component in helping the industry meet and exceed the experience of the consumer. Nell has also helped bring young minds to the floral industry by introducing them to the many options and opportunities available for blossoming careers.
