In what could be a special effect for the latest Hollywood 3-D science-fiction blockbuster, glowing, “mutant” flowers are now on display at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo.
The genetically engineered torenia flowers emit a yellow-green light, and the technology was originally created by NEC Solution Innovators in 2006 by introducing fluorescent protein from marine plankton into the plants.
The effect appears similar to that created using fluorescent paint, but this is the first time flowers have been modified to emit such light on their own, the company says.
