WASHINGTON – Florida farmers trying to combat pests and diseases attacking their blueberries, tomatoes and other specialty crops are getting help from the Obama administration.
The U.S. Agriculture Department announced Thursday it will provide nearly $4.6 million for 34 programs in the Sunshine State to research or promote home-grown fruits, vegetables and nursery plants.
The money will go to universities, local agencies and nonprofit organizations. It’s part of a $117.8-million national effort authorized as part of the farm bill approved earlier this year that aims to boost specialty crops, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, horticulture and nursery crops.
