After more than a week of widespread riots, strikes and demonstrations some of Colombia’s towns have started to suffer from food and fuel shortages and increased chaos in public transportation.
Tens of thousand of angry farmers have blocked major roads in demand of government subsidies for agricultural products and cheaper fuel prices.
After ruling out talks with the protesters until all the roadblocks are lifted, President Juan Manuel Santos has agreed to negotiate with the farmers to resolve the strike. The first meeting between the ministers and protest leaders will start later on Tuesday.
In Bogota, the main wholesale market for fruit and vegetables is empty. Meanwhile, the farmers destroyed their produce, pouring milk and throwing apples into the streets.
