Collier, Lee County Nurseries Not Yet Worried About New Whitefly Pest

NAPLES — There’s a new bug coming to town.

The new nuisance fly soon could be buzzing in Southwest Florida, but so far local nurseries, garden centers and landscaping businesses say they haven’t had a problem with the rugose spiraling whitefly.

This new fly could cause some damage, but it can be fixed, said George Akers, owner of Akers Family Pest Control.

“It would be no problem,” Akers said. “I’ll tackle it when it comes in.”

The rugose spiraling whitefly could gradually work its way to Southwest Florida from South Florida, said Doug Caldwell, a commercial landscape horticulture extension educator and landscape entomologist with the University of Florida Collier County Extension Service.
