A broad coalition of international horticultural organizations and related stakeholders recently launched the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) during the Floriade exhibition in The Netherlands. The initiative aims to guarantee that sustainability remains a widely accepted and applied issue in the sector, by formulating a common vision and approach towards it.
Mainstreaming sustainability will require the creation of a “global, multi-stakeholder sector-wide vision on sustainability and to align global and local interests in the sector in a pre-competitive way”, states the FSI website. That project is currently in the start-up phase, which involves the development of an equivalency tool for sustainability standards and a proper governance and funding model, plus the initiation of joint impact projects and communications.
A growing number of organizations from all over the world have been expressing interest in taking part in the FSI proposal, and still more are encouraged to do so. The list of founding participants already reads like a register of diverse heavyweights: ANCEF, BGI, BRO, EPHEA, Dutch Flower Group, Fair Flowers Fair Plants, FleuraMetz, FloraHolland, Florint, Hivos, LTO Noord Glaskracht, MPS, Pfitzer, Rainforest Rescue International, UnionFleurs, VGB, VSB and WWF Kenya are all involved.
