What once took place in a walk-in butter cooler in Green Bay with no spectators is now going prime time.
When the winners of the World Championship Cheese Contest are announced next week, it will occur in front of 400 people sipping wine and tasting cheese in a ballroom in Downtown Madison.
About 100 people attended the final day of judging at Monona Terrace when the contest was last held in 2010. This year’s evening event, starting at 6:30 p.m. and concluding around 8 p.m. on March 7 at Monona Terrace, is designed for more people to share in the experience. Tickets for the gala are $25.
“There’s a good crowd of people in Madison that are interested in where their food comes from,” said John Umhoefer, executive director of the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association. “We’re here to educate and enlighten. This is part of our mission.”
