Marin French Cheese began as the Civil War was ending. The Petaluma, Calif., company, the oldest continually running cheese company in the country, has crafted European-style brie and Camembert since 1865. A version of the Petite Breakfast cheese, a 4-inch disk of buttery, unripened brie, was served in saloons around San Francisco during the California Gold Rush.
The creamery uses a mix of local cow’s milk and hand-crafts cheese without preservatives or additives. Among the selections is the Petite Collection, 4-ounce rounds of triple cremes that resemble mini cheese wheels and come in choices like Petite Cream, which is rich and smooth, and an earthy-tasting Petite Truffle ($5.99 to $6.99 each).
