SAN JOSE, CALIF. – A new line of Pulse Chips will join RW Garcia’s artisan tortilla chips and crackers on store shelves this fall. The family-owned-and-operated snack brand will debut three new pulse crop-based varieties at the Summer Fancy Food Show, held from June 26-28 in New York City.
“We’ve been eager to utilize pulse crops, which are versatile, earth-friendly and delicious,” explained Genelle Chetcuti, RW Garcia’s senior director of marketing. “We wanted to create an entirely new product line to honor the International Year of the Pulse.”
The leading maker of corn-based artisan snacks for more than 30 years, RW Garcia has created three Pulse Chip varieties that are a delicious source of protein, are high in fiber and low in fat. They are:
- Black Bean & Ancient Grains: With just eight ingredients and a base that’s 26 percent black beans, these chips have an earthy flavor punctuated by red quinoa seeds and chia seeds.
- Chickpea & Ancient Grains: These chips have a subtle kick from red bell pepper flakes, and a mellow base that is made of 26 percent chickpeas.
- Lentil & Ancient Grains: Made of 26 percent green lentils, these chips also contain protein- and mineral-rich amaranth, which gives a nutty flavor.
Like the brand’s other tortilla chips and crackers, the new Pulse Chips will be free of additives and preservatives, with clean ingredient decks. They are Non-GMO Project Verified, certified gluten-free and kosher, and produced in the company’s wholly-owned peanut- and tree nut-free facility. The Pulse Chips are sold in 7-oz. bags and have an SRP of $3.99. They will be sold in HEB stores beginning in July, and other fine retailers nationwide.
The United Nations declared 2016 as the “International Year of Pulses” (IYP), in order to position pulses as a primary source of essential nutrients and to promote broad discussion, cooperation, understanding and awareness of the crop and its growers around the world. According to the UN, pulses are part of a healthy diet – they are rich in vitamins and minerals, provide a low-fat source of protein and contain high fiber content; they have also been shown to play a role in preventing illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
The sustainability of pulse crops was an important factor for RW Garcia, which is committed to sustainable practices and social good across its supply chain and production facilities. “We’ve always been the brand with heart, and now we’re the brand with pulses!” Chetcuti said. Pulses are part of rotational crops, have a positive impact on soil quality and have a lower carbon footprint than most animal sources of protein. RW Garcia prides itself on sourcing the finest ingredients available, and sources the chickpeas, black beans and lentils for these chips from growers in the U.S. and Canada.
