Patriot Pickle, the Wayne, New Jersey-based manufacturer of fresh barrel-cured pickles, has replaced its secondary packaging with eco-friendly Greencoat® wax-free boxes by Interstate Container to transport and brand its “All American Pickle” products.
During processing, hot-to-cold temperature shifts result in moisture and condensation which compromise the integrity of corrugated packaging. This manufacturing environment presents Patriot Pickle with the challenge of utilizing the right box, one that offers necessary strength, water-resistance, and graphic appeal.
Interstate Container plants in Brunswick, NJ and Cambridge, MD collaborated to develop Greencoat® boxes specific to Patriot Pickle’s packaging structure, paper combination, and coating requirements.
Richard Loos, Interstate Container Brunswick Sales Representative, highlights:
“We quickly identified and solved this difficult and costly problem for the customer. Within two weeks of our first meeting, 200 samples of Greencoat® boxes were developed and shipped for testing.”
Within six weeks of the first meeting with Interstate Container, Patriot Pickle began shipping its pickles in Greencoat® wax-free boxes.
The new Greencoat® wax-free boxes feature four main improvements to traditional wax boxes: increased strength, enhanced branding, cost effectiveness, and sustainability.
A Stronger Box
Although wax-free, Greencoat® boxes are 10% stronger than traditional wax-coated boxes and withstand moisture, shifts from hot-to-cold temperatures, and rough handling.
A Printed Box with Improved Branding
Without increasing the price, Interstate Container offered Patriot Pickle improved branding with a new 3-color box, as opposed to a 1-color box, featuring the company’s signature green pickle and the addition of the US flag for this ‘All American Pickle’ brand.
A Cost-Effective Box
Interstate Container reduced the overall cost of the box by decreasing the coating by 35% and light-weighting from double-wall to single-wall board.
Further, because Greencoat® boxes are wax-free and fully recyclable, customers do not have to pay costly wax disposal and landfill costs.
A Sustainable Box
Greencoat® is a Fibreboard Association (FBA)-certified wax-free packaging solution. One hundred per cent (100%) recyclable, repulpable, and compostable, it meets Patriot Pickle’s functional packaging requirements, while reducing costs.
Satisfied with their new packaging, Patriot Pickle transferred 100% of their packaging needs to Interstate Container.
Loos explains,
"By effectively identifying the Patriot Pickle's problem, we utilized our expertise and unique capabilities to find the right solution. We saved the customer money and offered them a stronger and more attractive package.
To date, we have successfully shipped roughly 200,000 boxes.”
Due to the success of the project and customer satisfaction, Patriot Pickle and Interstate Container will partner for an upcoming product development project.
