PA Won't Let Valentino's Make Basket Cheese This Easter

A longtime local cheesemaker will not be making any basket cheese this year.

Valentino Cheese and Dairy on Cedar Street in Mahoningtown has again been forbidden by state regulators to produce the seasonal specialty unless it purchases thousands of dollars worth of equipment upgrades. None of the company's other products are affected.

Basket cheese is used to make sausage pie, an Italian dish served for Easter.

Joe Gorgacz, Valentino's owner, said Monday that he has notified local grocers that he cannot supply basket cheese this Easter, leaving them to get it from other suppliers in Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
