Englewood, New Jersey – Champignon North America, Inc., the exclusive importer of Käserei Champignon cheeses, is pleased to announce that Grand Noir has taken Best of Class in the Blue veined cheese category at the World Championship Cheese Contest held in Madison, Wisconsin in March.
Grand Noir is one of Käserei Champignon’s specialty cheeses that has earned top honors at international cheese contests in recent years.
The secret to Grand Noir’s distinction, according to Flynne Wiley, Director of Administration and Marketing for Champignon North America, is the quality of the milk and the careful affinage of the cheese. “Grand Noir is made using fresh milk from regional farms in southern Germany. Each wheel is hand-?dipped in black wax and then cold-?ripened. The results are Grand Noir, which is distinctive in its flavor, texture, and look, as the only blue-?veined cheese aged in black wax.”
The judges agreed. Grand Noir took home the top honor of Best Blue veined cheese over 40 other entries submitted in its class.
“We couldn’t be more pleased,” said Wiley, who accepted the award at the World Championship Cheese gala held in Madison on April 14th. “We are very proud of the quality of cheeses from Käserei Champignon and we accept this honor on behalf of the master cheese makers who have crafted Grand Noir to perfection.”
The World Championship Cheese contest, organized by the Wisconsin Cheese Maker’s Association, gathered fifty expert judges from around the world to taste and evaluate cheeses from 31 states and 23 countries. The biennial contest, first established in 1957, received a record 2,955 entries this year.
