Sarah Hoffman never set out to create award-winning artisanal cheese. She just wanted to raise her children on a farm.
“I came at cheese-making from a really roundabout kind of way, and I like to say it’s a very serendipitous way,” Hoffman said. “It’s funny because until I actually hit on the idea of cheese-making, it didn’t even occur to me that I could become a cheese-maker.
“My real inspiration was that I wanted to live on a farm, and I wanted my kids to grow up on a farm because I had grown up that way. Then once we got our farm, and I was thinking about, well, what could we do on the farm that could be a sustainable business? And so that’s when it occurred to me — cheese. This is what I should be doing because by my educational background was in chemistry. I wanted to live on a farm. I worked with my aunt, who sold gourmet cheese, you know, so artisan cheese was clearly what I was meant to do.”
