Accident, MD – FireFly Farms, producer of artisanal goat cheeses from Maryland’s Allegheny Plateau, is pleased to congratulate the recipients of the 2011 Cheek Medal, awarded by The Muscarelle Museum of Art and the College of William & Mary, to recognize outstanding contributions in presentation of the arts.
At a dinner and ceremony on September 23, 2011, at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., two recipients of international acclaim in the arts were honored for their profound contributions in the fields of visual arts, performing arts, and museum arts:
- Everett Fahy, former Director of the Frick Collection and John Pope-Hennessey Chair of European Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
- David Crank, Emmy winning art director and production designer for almost thirty major projects, including Water for Elephants, the John Adams series, There Will Be Blood, and Hannibal
- The Cheek Medal Award Ceremony included a seated dinner that featured three of FireFly Farms award-winning artisanal cheeses:
- Black & Blue – a deeply blued wheel that is aged for 3-4 months. It has a black-wax rind and a rich, dense, buttery taste.
- Bûche Noire – a sophisticated, aged chevre log, first coated in vegetable ash and then aged for several weeks to develop a white-bloomed rind. The result is a rapidly maturing flavor and texture that is certain to please the most discerning of palates.
- Merry Goat Round – a surface-ripened goat’s milk round. It ripens from its rind inwards, growing progressively softer and creamier, and is our homage to brie or camembert.
Mike Koch, FireFly Farms President and Board Member at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William and Mary, was honored to be a part of the evening. “As a supporter of the arts and the Muscarelle Museum of Art, it was a pleasure to attend the presentation of the 2011 Cheek Medal Award, honoring excellence in and outstanding presentation of the arts, to Mr. Fahy and Mr. Crank. We at FireFly Farms were honored that our cheese was served at the fabulous dinner that evening.”
FireFly Farms cheese is available at farmer’s markets, restaurants, and many specialty retail stores and will be available at the FireFly Farms Creamery & Market, which opens on October 7, 2011, in downtown Accident, Md. About the Cheeck Medal Award:
In 1986, Leslie Cheek, Jr., created an endowment at The College of William & Mary to establish a national award for outstanding presentation of the arts. The Medal is bestowed to a person who has substantially contributed to the field of museum, performing, or visual arts. Leslie Cheek, Jr., was the founder of the Fine Arts Department of The College of William & Mary, and a noted architect, designer, and innovative leader in the arts. During his career, Mr. Cheek served as the director of the Baltimore Museum of Art and as the director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Cheek combined the elements of drama – costume, lighting, music, and props – with the fine arts to revolutionize the museum experience and to bring the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to national prominence.
