The Name
“Abella” means “bee” in Gallego, the language spoken in Galicia, and our name is a tribute to these remarkable creatures and the natural, healthy delicacies they produce. Abella is dedicated to the deeply rooted heritage and traditions of Galicia, including the age-old artisan techniques used by our local beekeepers Domingo, Fidel and Santi, the masters behind our fine single varietal and blended specialty honeys. Every drop is a work of art.
The Region
Galicia is a mystical, historic and naturally endowed area of rocky coasts, rugged mountains, lush valleys and meandering rivers. Since ancient times, it has been a source of spiritual, natural and culinary inspiration. Pilgrims still flock to the Camino de Santiago to see the remains of the apostle Saint James in a 12th-century grand cathedral, fishermen’s nets overflow with Centolla crab, crisp Albariño wine flows freely, and bountiful farms dot the countryside, including those in the quaint town of Padrón, famous for its peppers. It’s a place where traditions prevail and nature, including the “abella,” continues to work its magic.
The Honey Collection
Abella products consist of 100% pure, raw, unfiltered artisan honey from remote Galician apiaries. (We are in the process of securing the “Producto Ecologico” certification in Europe and the “Organic” certification in the U.S.) Royal jelly, pollen and propolis—all celebrated for their nutritious qualities—are the blends in our Specialty Honey Collection, the first product line we are introducing in 2011. Chestnut, oak, eucalyptus and blackberry are among our single varietal honeys that will be launched in the near future. Abella Honey is produced and jarred in the province of La Coruña, Galicia. The honey is barely handled by our beekeepers, except when the combs are carried from the hives to the spinner to obtain the honey. The entire process is manual, but strictly respectful of health regulations in order to obtain the highest-quality product.
Specialty Honey Collection-New in 2011
Abella Honey with Royal Jelly
(Rich, buttery, sweet)
Royal jelly, nature’s “super food,” is produced by worker bees and mainly fed to the queen to ensure her vitality and longevity. It is renowned for promoting healthy skin, energy, a strong immune system and fertility.
Abella Honey with Pollen
(Thick, flowery, tangy)
The pollen collected by bees as they gather nectar from flower blooms has long been used as a health food. It is known for numerous health benefits, particularly its anti-allergy properties.
Abella Honey with Propolis
(Tart, herbaceous, intense)
Bees gather propolis from tree bark and other vegetation and use it to seal and protect hives from contaminants. Famous for its health benefits, propolis has been called a natural antibiotic.
All of our specialty honey blends are delicious with yogurt, fruit, bread and tea. They pair well with cheeses (from mild ricotta to strong blue varietals) and elevate the flavor of vinaigrettes, savory sauces and crème fraiche.
Packaging
Our three specialty honeys are presented in unique, designer glass jars from Italy. Capacity: 149 g (5.25 oz)
