It all began in a kitchen in Dow's Prairie in the 1970s when a single mother was trying to find a healthier source of milk for her four daughters and noticed that her neighbor had goats.
Mary Keehn asked if she could buy a goat, and was told that she could have one if she could catch it. Two does, a $10,000 start-up loan from her parents and several years later, Cypress Grove Chevre was born.
"Mary was winning several national awards for her does, which meant they were great producers," said Janne Rasmussen, Cypress Grove marketing manager. "Then one day when Mary was in the grocery store, she saw cheese-making books and bought some. She taught herself how to make cheese from looking at the pictures and giving it to friends and family."
