Grilled cheese sandwiches are right up there with the best of cool-weather comfort foods and this is the time of year to enjoy them.
During a break from raking leaves or watching a football game on television, grilled cheese on bread or buns is just the solution to satisfy rumbling tummies, says a chef who recently won first prize for his creation at a national competition.
“When you get into cooler weather you want food that makes you feel good and toasted cheese sandwiches do the job,” says Michael Howell, owner and chef of Tempest Restaurant in Wolfville, N.S.
The cook-off competition held in Toronto and run by Dairy Farmers of Canada pitched four chefs against one another to come up with the best grilled cheese sandwich.
Howell won for his Panini Toscano recipe using havarti and prosciutto on a ciabatta bun.
