Tauton, MA — A burgeoning local company is investing in its roots, in more ways than one.
Tribe Mediterranean Foods, the second best-selling brand of hummus in the country, has expanded its facility on Prince Henry Drive in Myles Standish Industrial Park, and also launched a new product line focusing on a more traditional version of hummus.
Tribe, which already featured classic and organic lines of hummus, needed a larger facility after acquiring Veggie Patch, a wholesale vegetarian food company based in Connecticut that features an extensive menu of vegetarian products like meatless burgers, meatballs and buffalo wings, and spinach and broccoli nuggets. Tribe is relocating the Veggie Patch operation to Taunton, so that all of its operations are in one location. The plants will be consolidated but Veggie Patch products will keep the Veggie Patch brand name.
Instead of seeking a new, larger facility, Tribe President and CEO Carlos Canals opted to expand the company's current location. He worked with local city and state officials to leverage creative tax financing against the company's growth strategy, and was able to expand its Taunton facility to accommodate the growth with the help of a state Investment Tax Credit (ITC), coupled with a tax break from the city of Taunton.
