ELKMONT, Alabama – A goat cheese cheesecake produced in rural Limestone County beat out of the competition for best dessert or dessert topping during the 2014 sofi Awards in New York City.
Belle Chevre, an award-winning goat cheese creamery in Elkmont, won sofi's Gold award in late June. The 25-year-old artisan cheese company, which was named one of the 50 Best Independent American Food Brands and was featured in The New York Times, also operates tasting shops in downtown Huntsville and Elkmont.
The sofi Award is the highest honor in the $88.3 billion specialty food industry. Tasia Malakasis, who acquired Belle Chevre from founders Tom and Liz Parnell in 2007, said this year's judging included a national panel of specialty-food professionals, as well as votes from more than 150 buyers at sofi's Summer Fancy Food Show.
