Nostalgic ethnic foods are one of the many menu items that food watchers are calling a top trend for 2011. From soups to sandwiches, many of these comfort foods are in plentiful supply right here in Central Florida.

But one menu item in particular has been building to rock star status in recent years — the bánh mì, a Vietnamese sandwich that can rival subs, hoagies and po' boys in diversity.

Perhaps the buzz-worthy bánh mì should credit the momentum to the Travel Channel's Anthony Bourdain, who chowed down on the bánh mì in 2009 while eating his way through Vietnam on his hit show "No Reservations." No matter how the fire was fueled, this uncomplicated sandwich with a myriad of complex flavors is gathering loyal fans and is now the subject of a website called Battle of the Bánh Mì (battleofthebanhmi.com) dedicated to "finding, feasting and making Vietnamese sandwiches."
