GRAYS CHAPEL — Steve Tate sees, up close and personal, a disconnect in the public mind between the romance of farms like Goat Lady Dairy and the reality of small-scale farming.
“They love us,” said Tate, one of the owners and a co-founder of the creamery in northeastern Randolph County. “They visit and we tell them our story. They pet the goats and feed the chickens. Everybody says, ‘I wish I could do that.’ “
But visitors do not see behind the scenes of artisan cheesemaking operations such as Goat Lady Dairy. There are more than 30 in North Carolina.
