The Tulare Kraft plant, which produces parmesan cheese and cultured products like cottage cheese, is kicking up production of its Greek-style Athenos yogurt, something it began late last year.
Tulare city officials were notified two weeks ago that Kraft sought an increase in its wastewater discharge permit by 25 percent as a result of the planned uptick in production at the plant. Only days later, the higher volumes were noticed.
Company spokeswoman Joyce Hodel said last summer, Kraft added production of Breakstone Cottage Cheese in Tulare, as well.
The plant was built for Louis Rich (Oscar Mayer), a division of Kraft, but shut down in the 1990s after just two years. Some 1,400 employees were laid off.
