Those little tubs of hummus are a nutritious, convenient snack. But how to choose among the many tubs available at the supermarket?
We tried out five brands of the chickpea dip, which is popular in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures but has become quite mainstream in recent years. All were flavors labeled “classic” or “original,” and all contained tahini (sesame paste) and garlic.
Four were purchased at A&P – Sabra, Tribe, Cedar’s and Athenos. One was purchased at Trader Joe’s – the classic flavor in its smooth-and-creamy hummus line (the chain’s original hummus does not contain tahini). None was overly expensive – the pricing varied from about 30 cents an ounce (Trader Joe’s) to 45 cents an ounce (Sabra).
