BROOMFIELD, Colo. — In support of Non-GMO Month in October, Silk® the nation’s leading plant-based beverage brand, is supporting several initiatives that encourage the mandatory labeling of genetically modified (GM) foods, including the Right2Know March and the Just Label It – We Have a Right to Know campaign. In conjunction with its parent company, WhiteWave Foods, Silk is also supporting the Non-GMO Project and Non-GMO Month.
“We believe consumers have the right to make informed choices about the foods they eat, and the mandatory labeling of GM foods will give consumers more control over these choices,” said Craig Shiesley, general manager of Silk. “As a brand that has always produced our products without GM ingredients, we fully support calls for the mandatory labeling of GM foods.”
Silk’s sponsorship of the Right2Know March earlier this month included a cash contribution, as well as donations of aseptic single serve soymilk and almondmilk products for the 16-day walk from New York City to the White House organized to show support for the mandatory labeling of GE foods. The march kicked off Saturday, Oct. 1, and covered more than 200 miles through five states and the District of Columbia before culminating in a rally outside the White House on Oct. 16, World Food Day.
Silk is also supporting the Just Label It – We Have a Right to Know campaign, a consumer activation initiative supported by a diverse coalition of more than 400 businesses and organizations fighting for a GE food labeling standard. The campaign submitted a petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the goal of inspiring consumers around the country to contact the FDA to show their support for the mandatory labeling of GM foods. Consumers can visit www.justlabelit.org to comment in support of labeling.
In addition to support for these new initiatives, Silk, as part of WhiteWave Foods, is sponsoring Non-GMO Month for a second consecutive year. Non-GMO Month was created by the Non-GMO Project in 2010 as a way to help raise awareness of GMO issues. The Non-GMO Project, a multi-stakeholder collaboration committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products, educating consumers, and providing verified non-GMO choices, is celebrating Non-GMO Month with the support of more than 600 retailers, community groups and individuals nationwide. The entire Silk portfolio of plant-based beverages, including Silk Soymilk, Silk Pure Coconut and Silk Pure Almond, were verified by the Non-GMO Project’s product verification process earlier this year.
