ASTORIA, Ore. – The president of the Oregon Dairy Farmers Association said lawmakers will never let the price of raw milk double because it would throw the market into chaos.

But unless the Farm Bill is passed in Congress, that is a possibility. If lawmakers fail to pass the Farm Bill, the current rules would end and the dairy supports would expire. That would force the government to pay four times as much for milk.

About 80% of the multi-year Farm Bill — around $100 billion — is tied to the food stamp program. That's the issue on which the House and the Senate remain apart.

Dairy supports are a small percentage of that bill.
