Pennsylvania ‘Ahead Of The Curve’ When It Comes To Egg Safety

David Dietz refers to the eggs he sells at Central Market in York city as happy chicken eggs.

"We let the chickens have pasture," he said. "We have a pretty healthy flock with a varied diet."

He said he did not hear about the half-billion egg recall affecting several states until some of his regular customers mentioned it to him last weekend. About 1,000 cases of salmonella poisoning have been linked to eggs sold by two Iowa farms.

Pennsylvania is not affected in the recall.

Dietz said his regular customers are not worried about the safety of the eggs they purchase from him. He sells eggs gathered from his own flock and, when he is low, he purchases other cage-free, natural eggs from a farm in Lancaster County.
