JET, Okla. — Wagon Creek Creamery was making Greek yogurt before it surged in popularity, and it continues to be a popular seller for the operation between Jet and Goltry.
Dairy farmers since 1991, Ron and Barbara Crain have owned the creamery since 2005. Ron Crain’s brother gave them a kit to make cheese years ago, and one recipe was yogurt, Barbara Crain said. It called for the yogurt to be drained in a cheese bag to make yogurt cheese.
“That was actually our original product, then later somebody asked me if we had ever considered making Greek yogurt,” she said. “I didn’t know what that was, so I looked it up and I went, ‘Oh, this is what we’re already making, it’s just by a different name.’ We changed our labels to Greek yogurt, and it was much easier to sell the product because that was about the time that all the big boys were coming out with Greek yogurt. We’d already been making it for a few years, just calling it yogurt cheese.”
