The number of dairy farms in New York state has been steadily declining in recent years.
Nearly one-quarter of the state's dairy farms have disappeared since 2002, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said Tuesday. In a conference call, Gillibrand announced a comprehensive plan to attempt to stop that trend.
The senator said she has been traveling the state recently, holding listening sessions with farmers and learning about the problems that are plaguing the industry, in preparation for the 2012 Farm Bill. What she has learned, she said, is that dairy farms need help now.
