WALLINGTON — A state lawmaker from Bergen County is exploring the possibility of a new dairy manufacturer or distributor taking over the Farmland Dairies facility after its owner declined to reconsider plans to shutter the milk-processing plant.
Sen. Paul Sarlo, D-Wood-Ridge, sent a letter to the chief executive officer of Borden Dairy Co. last month requesting a meeting, after Borden filed notice in December that it intended to close the Wallington plant, which employs 323 people. Companies are required by law to give 60 days notice of a plant closure.
The intent of the meeting was to discuss the closure and determine what state resources might be available to keep Farmland Dairies open, Sarlo said.
