WASHINGTON — Another food labeling battle may be brewing at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, with implications for the dairy industry.
The FDA is taking public comment on possible changes in front-of-package labels, including nutritional symbols that could steer consumers toward or away from foods.
Groups representing dairy farmers see the discussion as a chance to bring up an issue that has vexed them for several years: food companies that use terms such as "milk" or "cheese" or "yogurt" for products that do not actually contain those ingredients.
In addition, milk processors say a mandatory system of nutritional symbols could guide consumers toward products such as sodas that look good for low calorie or sugar content but in fact have little food value — and compete with milk.
