CANBY — Word of a massive egg recall focusing on a sprawling farm in Iowa had barely hit the news when the telephones at Willamette Egg Farms near Canby started ringing.

Retailers in Oregon and elsewhere — the company counts 300 customers for its eggs and egg products — wanted to know whether they could place orders with the state’s largest egg producer to compensate for the recall of millions of Iowa eggs because of salmonella contamination.

And consumers, worried about what was happening, wanted to know whether Willamette’s products were safe.

“Things just went crazy,” said Greg Satrum, Willamette’s vice president and owner. “Fortunately, a lot of that has now subsided.”
