Giant Eagle To Sell Only Cage-Free Eggs By 2025

Giant Eagle Inc. will sell only cage-free eggs by 2025, the O'Hara-based grocery chain said Friday, joining dozens of food retailers, producers and others that have committed to source eggs from hens that aren't kept in cages.

Giant Eagle, the largest grocery store chain in Western Pennsylvania with more than 400 stores, is the latest company in the region to make the commitment sponsored by animal rights group Humane Society of the United States. Food and beverage giant Kraft Heinz Co. in March said it would use only the eggs favored by animal-rights groups in its food products by 2025.

“Giant Eagle is dedicated to meeting the evolving needs of our customers with high-quality foods, a convenient shopping experience and the best overall value,” the company said in a written statement. “In response to increased customer interest in cage-free egg offerings, Giant Eagle has announced a commitment to transition to a 100 percent cage-free egg supply chain by 2025.”
