James Robson, CEO of the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, can't say enough good things about Wisconsin cows. The only thing better than talking about those divas of dairy production — and comparing them to California's much-touted "happy cows" — would be to make the cows talk, he said.
"We often say that if California's cows are happy, Wisconsin cows are ecstatic," said Robson, a Texas native. "Cows actually like cooler weather versus the hot climates of California's dairy industry. Also, Wisconsin is one of the best places in the world for forages, so our cows are comfortable and eat well."
Is Wisconsin winning the battle for the hearts and minds of dairy lovers?
"Let me put it this way," he said. "When you can't talk about 160 years of dairying traditions, or the cheese competitions your cheesemakers dominate, about the only thing you can do to try and overcome that is by making cows talk."
