Egg Prices To Remain High Despite Bird Flu's Wane

WASHINGTON – The avian influenza virus that has wiped out millions of egg-laying hens the past six months may be ebbing, but it's effect on egg prices could stick around for months or longer.

Analysts and baking industry representatives warn that even if the spread of the bird flu outbreak ends, it could be two years or more before flocks hurt by the outbreak are fully restored. And because of that egg prices likely won't return to normal levels anytime soon.

So far, eggs around the Des Moines have tripled in price, rising to $3 per dozen. And while the higher prices have helped stave off demand enough to keep grocery shelves stocked, companies that rely on eggs are feeling a big pinch.
