Dairy Production Up In South Dakota At A Time Of Surplus

South Dakota dairy cows produced 207 million pounds of milk in September, up 5 percent from a year ago, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.
There were an additional 7,000 head of milk cows in the state, totaling 15,000 head,
Milk production per cow averaged 1,800 pounds.
The USDA announced last week it will be purchasing $20 million worth of cheddar cheese in light of a record cheese surplus across the U.S. The cheese will go to food banks and other food assistance programs.
