SACRAMENTO – A bill on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk would extend California's upcoming ban on cramped conditions for egg-laying hens to millions of out-of-state chickens.
The legislation emerged last year, soon after California voters overwhelmingly approved Prop. 2 in November 2008. The initiative, starting in 2015, requires more room for hens and other farm animals.
But what Schwarzenegger will do on the bill remains a mystery. He opposed Prop. 2, but his office said Wednesday that he has taken no position on the latest measure. He has until Tuesday to act.
