HANOVER — Charles Lanktree grew up in Bayonne, a seemingly unlikely background for someone who oversees an egg-producing empire fueled by 110 million chickens on farms throughout the United States.

Lanktree, the chief executive officer of Eggland's Best, is not a farmer — not that agricultural expertise is necessary to run a company with annual retail sales of $650 million.

"I'm more in the consumer marketing business. Eggs, in this case, is the product," Lanktree, 61, said last week in an interview at the company's 4,300-square-foot executive suite in the town's Cedar Knolls section.
