PHILADELPHIA – Milk will play a prominent role at the 101st annual Pennsylvania Farm Show thanks to American Dairy Association North East, your local dairy checkoff group, working together with several partners to promote the Commonwealth’s number one agricultural industry – dairy. Look for the common theme, “Your Milk Comes From a Good Place,” at the many programs American Dairy Association North East is supporting at the 2017 event, which runs from Jan. 7-14.
Farm-to-Shelf Exhibit
Dairy farming and dairy products will be highlighted in the Weis Farm-to Shelf commodities exhibit in the main exhibit hall. The dairy portion of the display, coordinated with the Center for Dairy Excellence and Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association, will include live calves, a life-size fiberglass milking cow, and six interactive learning displays to explain the process of moving milk from cow to consumer. Dairy farmers and industry representatives will volunteer their time to talk with Farm Show guests about how dairy farmers care for their animals and the many steps taken to produce safe, wholesome milk.
Milking Parlor Demonstrations
Cow milking demonstrations will take place throughout the week at the Milking Parlor, located in the North Building (Dairy Barn). Dairy farmers and industry representatives will explain the process of milking a cow to Farm Show visitors while answering consumer’s questions.
Butter Sculpture
A visit to the Farm Show isn’t complete without a stop at the butter sculpture. Renowned sculptor Jim Victor returns this year to create the 1,000-pound sculpture, which will be unveiled during a press conference at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 5. Be sure to stop by the Main Floor to see the buttery work of art.
“Fill a Glass with Hope”
On Friday, January 6 at 12 noon, a press conference will be held in the food court to celebrate “Fill a Glass with Hope®,” a partnership between Feeding Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association, American Dairy Association North East and the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program. Conceived by Pennsylvania’s local dairy farmers, the fresh milk campaign is putting nutritious milk in the hands of those who need it most—Pennsylvania’s children. The press conference includes special keynote speakers as Farm Show kicks off to a wonderful start!
Dairy Princesses and AgExplorer Learning Station
Pennsylvania Dairy Princess and Promotion Services, Inc. (PDPPS) will have a fun and interactive activity to help teach Farm Show visitors about dairy products and the dairy industry. Their learning station is part of the AgExplorer activity that leads visitors throughout the complex to learn more about Pennsylvania agriculture. PDPPS will also have dairy promotion apparel for sale during the Farm Show.
PA Preferred® Culinary Connection
Saturday, Jan. 14, is Dairy Day at the PA Preferred® Culinary Connection, and American Dairy Association North East will be on hand to show consumers ways to bring dairy into their kitchens. This year’s on-stage demonstration will feature Chef Tina Jackson and her “Garlic-Curry Chicken Breasts with Greek Yogurt Sauce.” The recipe will be sampled to those who gather to watch the demonstration and will be available in the Culinary Connection recipe book. Farm Show visitors will have the chance to learn about cooking with dairy foods and win prizes during the demonstrations.
