Watson's Edible Glitter Contains No Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils

West Haven CT –  Watson Inc produces Edible GlitterTM for application as a sprinkle, topping or inclusion. Edible GlitterTM contains no Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (PHOs), a source of trans fats. Edible GlitterTM can be used in place of traditional sprinkles, often referred to as “Jimmies” or “Shots”, which generally contain PHOs as the third ingredient. Edible Glitter can provide a viable option for food manufacturers, food service operations, and others looking to eliminate PHOs.

The Food and Drug Administration announced on June 16th that it has finalized its determination that partially hydrogenated oils, the primary dietary source of industrially-produced trans-fat, are not Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for use in human food. You can read more about the FDA’s position on trans-fat here and the FDA official press release from June 16, 2015, is available at this link.

Food manufacturers have until June 18, 2018, to remove PHOs from their products.

In addition to being free of PHOs, Edible GlitterTM has many additional benefits, including being sugar free and providing improved coverage, which translates into lower usage rate (by weight) and a significant reduction in overall cost for sprinkles or toppings compared to traditional sprinkles like ”Jimmies” or “Shots”.  Please refer to our benefits page for additional information.

Edible Glitter provides excellent visual appeal and vibrant color. There are several varieties of Edible Glitter.  Our most popular is Edible Glitter Flake, which is made from gum arabic. The ingredient statement for Edible Glitter is also available in the link provided above.

Watson can provide technical assistance to food manufacturers that currently use traditional sprinkles and would like to calculate use-rates and the savings made possible by converting to Edible GlitterTM. Watson can also provide information addressing labeling, nutritional profile, and shelf-life stability. Please visit the website for additional information.
