Night-shift workers at the Vachon snack-cake plant in Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce, Que., were taken aback last year when a man showed up unannounced and identified himself as the division's new president.
What kind of manager comes calling at 2:30 a.m.?
Lionel Ettedgui, for one.
"I like to go for the overnight shift. There's not as much supervision. Employees are comfortable talking to you, and they'll tell you what they're really thinking," said Ettedgui, named 18 months ago to head the bakery division of Montreal-based cheesemaker Saputo Inc.
There hasn't been much idle time since he joined Saputo. The company wanted new blood for a division perceived as having gone stale, and which some would prefer to see sold off.
