Berwyn, Ill. — A bakery’s bread delivery that once fit in the back of a station wagon today takes 250 truckloads traveling cross-country weekly. It’s a success story 50 years in the making for the Turano family, who celebrate the legacy of the late founder, Mariano Turano, who started it all with a small neighborhood bakery in Berwyn in 1962. You’ll find Turano Baking Company products on grocery shelves in every suburban town, and served in restaurants across the U.S.

Mario Turano, a third-generation family member, shares the business’ history.

“In the beginning, Mariano would bake all night into the morning, then load fresh breads in the family station wagon and deliver from house-to-house in many of the original Italian neighborhoods; he often got help from his young sons, Renato, Umberto and Giancarlo,” says Mario, marketing director and son of Renato.

He says his grandfather was affectionately known as Papa Mario, adding, “Mariano Turano’s legacy is the heartbeat of what we do on a daily basis.”
