Tootie Pie Hasn’t Tasted Real Success

BOERNE — The heady smell of baking wafts continuously into the office of Don Merrill Jr., and no wonder.

Merrill is CEO of Tootie Pie Co., an outfit with a cute name whose products, aimed at the high-end dessert market, have won a devoted following.

The company bakes pies in a small plant connected to Merrill's office. Once baked, the pies are frozen and sold at wholesale and retail and to corporate clients.

The goodies have garnered kudos from diners and food critics. And Tootie Pie's most recent offering — its chocolate-covered “pie on a stick” — has been a hit at its two retail stores in San Antonio.
