Donna Marie Bruno knew there had to be something more when her friend Heidi, who had been diagnosed with celiac disease — related to gluten ingestion — handed her a loaf of gluten-free bread.
"They were pretty bad," said Bruno, of Penfield. She had been baking all her life, and started experimenting with ingredients to come up with something gluten-free that tasted better than grain and grit.
Bruno opened the first fully gluten-free bakery in Rochester called Donna Marie's Gluten Free Bakery on the west side of the city in 2009, and will hold a grand opening for a second retail location on Penfield Road Saturday.
