HEADLAND — A Headland yeast plant’s first expansion in nearly 16 years will add 25 jobs and a new facility.

Red Star Yeast Company’s construction of a new dry yeast facility began about a year ago. According to plant manager Dennis Barry, the expansion allows the facility to provide shelf-stable yeast suitable for both domestic and export markets.

The plant currently produces a fresh liquid yeast product for the industrial bakery market.

Barry said the expansion is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2016. He said a job fair was held in Headland earlier this month in search of up to 25 additional employees at the plant. Those workers are expected to start at the plant in January.
