Innovative practices evident at Dave’s Killer Bread and its sister operation Nature Bake hold the seeds to Oregon’s economic recovery, said U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), who toured the Milwaukie baking facility on Tuesday, May 31.
“This is exactly the kind of company we’re trying to duplicate around the state,” he told a question-and-answer session after the tour.
Dave Dahl and his family gave Wyden and some visiting farmers an overview of the Nature Bake operation and then hosted the session afterward for employees, community members and the media. Many of those packed into the room had questions for the three-term senator, ranging from the U.S.A. Patriot Act extension to the debt ceiling, infrastructure decay, farm bill content, education policy and job-creation strategies.
Wyden praised Dahl’s attempts to keep annual company growth at a steady level and to focus on decentralized operations. Challenges to similar firms are the costs of buying locally produced ingredients and getting coordinated technical support to manage the transition to organic.
