New York City’s markets and cafes are ripping off consumers by charging sales tax on bread, baked goods and other exempt items. City inspectors issued 212 violations last year to supermarkets and grocers for “deceptive practices,” according to documents obtained by The Post.
The ticket blitz nabbed some of the biggest chains in the city, including Key Food, ShopRite, Whole Foods, Western Beef, D’Agostino’s, Trader Joe’s, Fairway, Gristedes and Met Foodmarkets, all of which were accused of improperly charging sales tax.
Some of the tax violations could be chalked up to the city’s bizarre rules. A plain bagel, for instance, is untaxed, but a buttered bagel is taxed. Honey-roasted nuts are taxed; unroasted nuts aren’t.
